How to Read a Calculator

Start with the calculator's own formula or method, inputs, and assumptions. Results are generated from those inputs, so an estimate can be useful only to the extent that its assumptions fit the situation you are evaluating.

For a tool that depends on a current limit, threshold, or guideline, check the date and source linked on that tool against the relevant primary authority. The methodology explains common categories and limitations, and the guides provide general background rather than professional advice.

Formula and Standards Sources

• Tool-level context. Read the formula, inputs, assumptions, and limitations displayed on the calculator you are using.
• Source links where applicable. When a result depends on an external standard or current value, use the linked source and verify it is current.
• Estimates are not outcomes. A projection, range, or tax estimate cannot account for facts outside the selected inputs.
• Appropriate use. For medical, financial, legal, tax, safety, or engineering decisions, confirm the current primary source or seek qualified advice.

Update Cadence

Standards, rates, and limits can change. Check the date a tool's assumptions reflect and compare it with the current primary source before acting on a result.

Corrections Process

If a calculator result looks wrong, report it with enough detail to reproduce the inputs and compare them with a cited source.

2. Context. Include the formula or source you used to assess the result.
